Dove hunting is one of the most social and fast-paced hunts you can experience. Whether it's your first time in a field or you're a seasoned wingshooter, a little preparation goes a long way. Here's everything you need to know to have a great dove season.
1. Find the Right Field
Doves are creatures of habit — they fly the same routes between roosting areas, water sources, and feeding fields every day. Sunflower fields, harvested grain fields (corn, milo, wheat), and areas near water are prime locations. Permission from landowners is key, so start building those relationships early.
2. Scout Before Opening Day
Spend time watching fields in the week before the season opens. Note where birds are flying in, at what times, and from which direction. Doves tend to fly lower in the morning and higher midday. The best hunting is typically the first 2 hours after sunrise and the last 2 hours before sunset.
3. Set Up Smart
Position yourself along flight corridors — fence lines, field edges, tree lines, and power lines are all natural routes doves follow. Keep the sun at your back when possible so you're not squinting into the light when birds approach. A simple folding stool and a bucket of shells are your best friends on a dove hunt.
4. Use Decoys
Dove decoys are underused and surprisingly effective. Place spinning-wing dove decoys or static decoys on fence posts and bare branches near your setup. Doves are social birds — seeing other doves already landed will pull curious birds into range.
5. Master Your Shot
Doves are the ultimate wingshooting challenge. They fly fast, change direction suddenly, and always seem to juke at the last second. Lead the bird more than you think you need to, keep your cheek on the stock, and follow through on your swing. A 12 or 20 gauge with 7.5 or 8 shot is the classic dove load.
6. Stay Hydrated and Beat the Heat
Dove season opens in early September in most states — which means summer heat. Drink plenty of water, wear breathable clothing, and take breaks in the shade. A lightweight, breathable hunting shirt makes a huge difference on those hot opening-day hunts.
7. Clean and Cook Your Birds
Dove meat is dark, rich, and delicious when prepared right. The classic dove popper — wrapped in bacon with a jalapeño and cream cheese — is a hunting tradition for good reason. Clean your birds the same day you shoot them and keep them on ice.
